What Makes A Great Dad? Laps And Laughs

I love the ages of my kids. Each one is different, and each has it’s own special things to enjoy about it.

But right now, I really enjoy the age of two.

I know. You’re thinking, “What?!?!”

One of my daughters is two right now. She’ll turn three after the first of the year. And right now, she is in a fun age.

My two older girls think they are “too old” for hugs now. My two older boys are “too tough.”

But my two year old… She’s completely in love with her dad right now. I manage to get a couple dozen hugs from her each day. And not just a quick hug. I’m talking about the tight-around-the-neck hug that lasts for a few minutes.

A few nights ago, I had one of my favorite Pandora stations playing in the house. I grabbed this huggable daughter and danced through the living room with her. She giggled and laughed until she was out of breath!

In fact, the other kids were laughing too. And each of the younger ones wanted a turn. We danced around the living room for what seemed like hours to me. Probably because I was out of breath and felt like I was going to die.

But the kids loved it.

My point is this: Dads, we have to create moments where we can pull our kids up on our laps and hug them and make them laugh and enjoy some time with each other.

A happy home is a place where all the inhabitants can feel safe and secure. And your kids will learn to live more boldly because they are assured of your simple, yet profound love.

So, go make an opportunity to pull a kid up onto your lap. Make them laugh. Hug them. Enjoy the time together.

Be deliberate, Dad!
