New Year’s Resolutions

I’m not usually too big on New Year’s Resolutions. I can never keep them, and it usually doesn’t take me very long to figure that out.

Like the year that I decided to join a gym and get in shape. I went on January 2… and that was it. I’m glad I paid for that membership by the month instead of by the year.

But even though I don’t usually make resolutions any more, this year I am resolving to do one thing better than I ever have.

I am going to make it a point to be more present when I am with my family. That means putting down the phone or iPad, and focusing on being with them when I am with them.

I have watched too many dads ignoring their wives and kids because the latest posts on Facebook or Twitter commanded their attention more than their own family. I’ve watched too many dads browsing through YouTube instead of seeing what their own children were doing, which was much more entertaining anyway.

In fact, I’ve been there and done that myself, all too often.

So this year, my time with my family will be just that: time with my family. Time spent focusing on them. Time spent giving them the attention they need, and crave, and deserve. Time that I mean to give them, but just don’t always. My focus will be more clear and sharp.

And, as result, I will find much more satisfaction than I ever could from the latest Facebook status updates. And I will gain a deeper appreciation for my family. And I will love them more deeply. And they will love it, I know.

Dads, make 2015 the year you spend every possible moment focusing on your family as well. Your kids crave it, and they will thrive from it. And so will you.

Make it happen!

Be deliberate, Dad!
